Egg adventures!

This has been a pretty busy weekend, I even didn't have time to post the pics from Easter egg here they are!
In Latvia (and I'm guessing in other places too) people prefer natural egg dyeing methods like onion skins, black tea, red beet juice, blueberry jam etc. I know it sounds weird, but the result is pretty interesting. I have tried to dye eggs only in onion skins - that is what my family does every year - and they come out crazy beautiful! So this year I decided to show my American friends this tradition.
It's a fun process - you collect different shaped leaves and flowers, tie them around your egg and then boil the egg in onion skins. We put our eggs in little sacks, so the leaves would hold better. After 10-15 min of boiling, take the egg out, take off all the leaves etc and and the egg will be brown with different color white, yellow and greenish prints left from the leaves and flowers. The most fun part is you can never know what's gonna come out!

Happy Easter also to all little creatures!

Zoo in London made a special Easter surprise for their little meerkats - Easter eggs filled with worms and raisins! Sounds tasty, haha!

Happy Easter!

Take a look at my Easter basket! We painted some eggs yesterday, I baked crackers and set up this basket. Someone told me that's not a basket but a tray. Whatever. :)
I will post later some pics from the egg painting (imagine, natural egg dyeing in onion skins)! That was fun!
 p.s. Big "thank you" goes to Bonnie, who is always letting me use her awesome camera to take pics! :)

Almond biscotti

Very simple and fast recipe for amazing almond cookies. I've made these biscotti at least 3 times and yesterday I made them again to put in my Easter basket. It's gonna be great and very tasty basket - full of sweets, cookies and natural dye eggs. :)

So what do you need for almond biscotti:
1 ¾ cups whole blanched almonds;
1 2/3 cups all purpose flour, pluse extra for dusting;
generous ¾ cup superfine sugar, plus extra for sprinkling;
1 tsp baking powder;
½ tsp ground cinnamon;
2 eggs;
2 tsp vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 350F/180C. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
Very roughly chop the almonds, leaving some whole.
Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and cinnamon together in a mixing bowl. Stir in the almonds.
Beat the egs with the vanilla extract ina small bowl, then add to the flour mixture and mix together to form a firm dough.
Turn the fough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly.
Divide the dough in half and shape each piece into a log, roughly 2 inches/5 cm wide. Transfer to the prepared baking sheets and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 min until firm.

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly, then transfer to a cutting board and cut into ½ inch/1 cm slices. Meanwhile reduce the oven temperature to 325F/160C.
Arange the slices, cut sides down, on the baking sheets. Bake in oven for 15-20 min, until dry and crispy.

That's it!

How-Tuesday: Make a Hanging Notepad

I guess a lot of people read Etsy blog anyway, but I found this post so interesting and useful that I want to re-post the link on my blog.

My music

If there is any music band I can always listen to and never get tired/bored of that's MEW (Mew on MySpace). I've been listening to them for only a few years, but I fell in love immediately after hearing them once. A year ago I saw their show in Chicago and honestly that was one of the best shows I've ever seen. They are simply great!

As I was playing Mew all morning long, I decided to share a few songs with you. Unfortunately most of them don't have official videos, so I posted what I found on YouTube. You can see other official Mew videos on their MySpace.

Easter basket

Today I got my first Easter basket! As I'm not American, giving Easter baskets has never been a tradition for Easter. I'm so excited now! My bf's mom made us 2 wonderful baskets. His even has an allergy medicine in it! :)

Now I can't wait to make my own basket. That won't be for giving to someone, just for keeping at home on the table. I will fill it with a lot of chocolate, jelly beans, home made cookies and hand painted eggs.

So very soon I will publish a post about traditional egg painting - the way it's done in my home country! It's gonna be FUN!

mini pig oink oink

Whenever I will get a permanent job and a place to live, I'm getting a mini (micro pig). Not a dog, not a cat, not a hamster or a rabbit, but a mini pig. I would love to have a dog too, but I wouldn't like to keep my dog (a big dog) in my city apartment. That would be unfair and mean.

So I'm getting a little piggy. His (yes, I want to have a boy) will be Kevin...Kevin Bacon. Seriously.

I don't think there is anything much cuter than a mini pig. And all I've read about them indicates that they are smart and very clean. Contrary to what most of the people might think.

Check out this video and you will understand why I want to have a micro pig. :)

I found it so amusing that there is even a special page with piggy sounds in different languages.

Oink Oink!
Ruk Ruk (in Latvian)!

Polka dots!

Polka dots are so much fun! I personally like only black and white combination, but I'm sure other colors look pretty good too. So I have decided to get something "polka dotty" for this summer. If I could afford those amazing polka dot shoes by Sergio Rossi, I would get at least 2 pairs, haha!
But as for now, these cute polka dot skirts seems like a good deal to me!

 I prefer this fabric, but mini length...

I know, I know, this is not polka dot skirt - but looks good anyway, huh?

Final Four! Go Cats! ;)

I'm not a huge college basketball fan, but as I'm here in KY, it somehow feels right to support them. At least today.

April fools day

Oh, I've totally forgot that today is the April fools day. So here is something funny to make your day!
This blog is posting texts from the parents sent to their kids. As you can imagine they are hilarious.

Here are some of them (Sorry, I couldn't figure out a good way of re-posting some of them):

MOM:Are you at home now?
ME:Yeah. Why?
MOM:I’m on google earth and looking at your house. Wave at me through the window!

DAD:Let me know when you are up and ready to grab breakfast.
ME:I’m up.
DAD:Want to honest breakfast?
DAD:Want to go get breakfast?
ME:Sure. Where are you?
DAD:Highgrove st.
ME:You are a danger to public safety.
DAD:Back door

ME:I’m thinkin about trying out for cheerleading.
MOM:I was a cheerleader in high school for a good two months before I was kicked off the squad!
ME:Kicked off?
MOM:The other girls didn’t know how to have fun.
